Obituary for Verla Mae Steward (Maxey)
Verla Mae Steward aged 89 of Harrison went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Verla was born October 13, 1932, in Bluford, Illinois the daughter of Raymond and Flora Mae (McCord) Maxey. Verla was united in marriage to Mr. Bobby Neil Steward on April 21, 1956, in Aurora, Illinois. Dr. Steward preceded Mrs. Steward on January 1, 2005, after forty-eight years of marriage.
Mrs. Steward had resided in Harrison since 1973, moving from Cheboygan, Michigan. Verla was a member of First Baptist Church, Harrison for many years, where she assisted her husband in the church ministry. Verla loved her Bible, and her family, especially her grandchildren. She also found great relaxation in feeding and watching the birds, sewing, floral and vegetable gardening and reading various books.
Surviving Mrs. Steward are her four loving children: Cathy Lockwood and husband Tim of Harrison, Karen LeClair and husband Mark of Muskegon, Michigan, Tim Steward of Zeeland, Michigan, and Dan Steward and wife Terri of Sellersville, Pennsylvania, nineteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Patsy Johnson of Oak Harbor, Washington, plus many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Verla also was preceded in death by a great grandson, four siblings: Pauline Braddock, Lucy Patterson, Noble Maxey, and Donald Maxey.
Funeral services for Mrs. Steward will be held Friday, March 25, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. from Community Baptist Church, 3088 Mostetler Road, Harrison with Pastor Ron Callen officiating. Visitation will take place Friday, March 25, 2022, from 12:30 p.m. until time of service. Interment will be in Pleasant Plains Cemetery, Harrison.
