Obituary for Byron J. McCune

Byron James McCune age 79 of rural Harrison passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022, at MyMichigan Health, Clare, Michigan. Byron was born June 29, 1942, in Lansing, Michigan the son of Elmer C. and Ruby B. (Younglove) McCune. Byron enlisted in the United States Army and honorably served his country. Soon after his military obligation, Byron was united in marriage to Ms. Diane Louise Groshong on August 29, 1964 in Shelton, Washington.
Mr. McCune retired from General Motors after thirty years of service as a tool and die maker. Byron relocated to Harrison in 1994, moving from Grand Ledge, Michigan. While residing in Harrison, Byron became a bus Driver with the Clare County Transit and spent ten years of service, providing transportation to the residents of Clare County. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, restoring cars, reloading ammunition and operating his Amateur Radio. Many will remember Byron for his “Little Johnny Jokes” and his love of listening to “Sons of Pioneers” radio broadcasts.
Surviving Mr. McCune is his loving wife and best friend of fifty-seven years, Mrs. Diane Louise McCune of Harrison, five children: Karen McCune of Mulliken, Michigan, Dawn McCune and Ken Tillison of Grand Ledge, Keith McCune and Star Lesatz-Conway of Grand Ledge, James McCune of Eaton Rapids, Michigan and Gerald McCune and wife Laura of Charlotte, Michigan, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, two sisters: Marjorie Morgan of Leslie, Michigan and LuElla Johnson and husband Terry Sr. of Satsuma, Florida, one brother: Bill (Joyce) McCune of Greenup, Kentucky, plus many nieces, nephews and extended family. Mr. McCune was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Barbara J. Dean and two brothers in law: Winston Morgan and Gordon Dean.
Life Celebration services and military honors for Byron will be held Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. from Franklin Township Hall, 9809 North M-18, Gladwin, Michigan 48624. Inurnment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan.
